Arcandra Tahar mantan Wakil Menteri ESDM dan Komisaris Utama PT PGN Tbk. Mengemukakan bahwa permintaan gas bumi diperkirakan akan terus meningkat dalam beberapa tahun mendatang. Alasannya, gas memiliki peranan penting sebagai penopang transisi energi untuk mendukung penggunaan energi bersih.
Bahkan, ia memprediksi dalam waktu 10-15 tahun mendatang permintaan gas bumi yang diubah menjadi gas alam cair atau LNG dunia bakal melonjak menjadi 500 juta metrik ton (million metric tonne per annum/mtpa).
“Untuk itu mari kita lihat ke depan kebutuhan LNG dunia sekitar 350 juta ton per annum, 10-15 tahun lagi akan meningkat 500 juta ton bayangkan kebutuhan gas dunia semasif itu,” ujarnya dalam acara Energy Corner CNBC Indonesia, Selasa (23/5/2023).
Menurut Arcandra naiknya permintaan LNG tersebut dapat terlihat dari banyaknya Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Plant yang dibangun di beberapa negara. Misalnya seperti di Amerika Serikat hingga Timur Tengah yang memproyeksikan kebutuhan LNG dunia meningkat.
Ia juga menilai hadirnya kendaraan listrik juga tidak sepenuhnya dapat menggantikan peran gas untuk kebutuhan manusia. Mengingat, peran gas tidak hanya untuk kebutuhan listrik saja.
“Jadi kita jangan salah melihat gas itu hanya untuk kelistrikan. Banyak hal dari kita semua ini adalah gas petrochemical pupuk, komputer, mobil listrik banyak komponen gas. Jadi untuk itu mari kita lihat perspektif lebih luas,” ujarnya.
