Jakarta – Meskipun terjadi kenaikan permukaan air laut karena pelelehan lapisan es di Antartika. Belum ada informasi pasti mengenai sejauh mana lapisan es Antartika (AIS) mencair akibat perubahan iklim. Dilansir dari The Week, hal itu diungkapkan para peneliti dari Universitas Hohai dan lembaga-lembaga China.
“Belum diketahui seberapa banyak Lapisan Es Antartika (AIS) akan berkontribusi pada peningkatan keseluruhan permukaan laut dan bahwa model saat ini bervariasi secara drastis,” tulis laman itu, mengutip pada Selasa (23/5/2023).
Dalam makalah yang terbit di jurnal Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research. Disebutkan bahwa mencairnya AIS akibat naiknya suhu panas bumi dan Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW).
“CDW merupakan campuran dari massa air laut dari cekungan laut yang berbeda. Dan memuncak dalam massa air yang hangat dan asin di Samudera Selatan, atau perairan selatan di sekitar Antartika,” jelasnya.
Proses CDW itu lah yang diduga menyebabkan hilangnya potongan dari ujung gletser dan naiknya permukaan laut.
Zhaomin Wang, penulis pertama penelitian mengatakan. memerlukan pemahaman tentang pengangkutan CDW dan bagaimana arus pesisir, angin permukaan, dan torsi tekanan bawah dalam interaksi arus air hangat dengan massa glasial dan lapisan es.
